Cárdenas, who grew up in Colombia, was awarded the competitive fellowship by the Delaware Public Humanities Institute of the Center for Material Culture Studies at the University of Delaware. He writes in his proposal; "As a visual artist, I have drawn inspiration from my experience and closeness to archeological artifacts from pre-columbian Colombia, as referents for my practice. The cosmologies and visual language of the ethnicities that inhabited modern day Colombia, present a particular opportunity to consider the cultural influence that the peoples of the Andes had on and with the inhabitants of the Caribbean.
Having been granted access to closely study and appreciate artifacts from four collections held at the Gold Museum in Bogotá, I wish to expand the frame of reference through which I approach my creative practice and also, showcase the diversity of pre-columbian civilizations, as an important region in flux, that exemplifies the fluidity of visual language and belief systems between two different regions of the Americas. "
